General Power of Attorney

A legal document that lets someone you trust handle your affairs in the UAE when you cannot do it yourself. AED 399.

What is a general power of attorney?

A legal document that lets someone you trust deal with things for you.

  1. You choose someone you trust
  2. You sign it in front of a notary
  3. They can act for you

They can deal with

  • Everyday personal affairs

    Bills, post and utilities

  • Government paperwork

    Forms and applications

  • Visas and residency

    Visa and residency paperwork

  • Everyday banking

    Your existing accounts

When do you need one?

Signing needs a notary, so it is easiest to set up before you need it.

  • Summer abroad

Bills and banking keep moving while you are away.

  • Working abroad

Paperwork that needs a person in the UAE gets done.

  • Moving away

Loose ends handled after you leave.

  • You and your partner

Each of you can act for the other.

What is the difference between a general and a special power of attorney?

A general power of attorney covers your everyday affairs. A special power of attorney is for one specific job, such as selling a car or a property.

Who can I choose?

Any adult you trust, for example your partner, a relative or a friend.

Do I need one if I have a will?

They do different jobs. A will is used after you die. A general power of attorney is used while you are alive, when you cannot deal with something yourself, for example because you are abroad. Many people have both.

Is this the same as a UK lasting power of attorney?

Not quite. It is the closest UAE document for money and everyday affairs, but it is for while you can still make your own decisions, and it does not cover health or care decisions.

What does it not cover?

It is for your everyday personal affairs. Selling or buying a property, selling a car or acting for a company each need their own document. You can add one in the same order: you pay the higher fee once, and each extra document is AED 100. Health and medical decisions are not covered.

How long is it valid?

You choose one year, two years or longer. The notary fee depends on it: ADJD’s usual published basis is AED 100 per year of validity. For most routes the form shows the expected notary fee before you pay.

Can my partner and I appoint each other?

Yes. Each of you needs your own power of attorney, so two POAs are AED 798. Each of you can name the other as the person who acts for you.

Will my bank or authority accept it?

No document is guaranteed to work with every bank or authority. We check what the intended recipient currently requires before preparing your POA. The recipient still makes the final acceptance decision.

Can I arrange it while I am outside the UAE?

Often, yes. Depending on your situation, you may be eligible to sign through a remote UAE notary. If that route is not available, we guide you through the suitable embassy or overseas signing steps before anything is signed.

How long does it take?

Answering the questions takes a few minutes. After you pay and add your details and ID, we usually send your draft within one business day. Notarisation timing depends on your route and the notary’s availability.

Can it be cancelled later?

A power of attorney can generally be revoked. The steps depend on how it was notarised and which organisations rely on it, so we confirm the process for your route.
